The Russian leader told students across the country that ‘whoever leads in AI will rule the world.’ While we’ve heard a lot lately from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and Professor Stephen Hawking about the dangers of artificial intelligence, this week it was Russian President Vladimir Putin who made headlines after discussing the subject during an open science lesson via live satellite linkup.”Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind,” he said. “It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict.”
“Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.” Far from coveting such world domination himself however, Putin was quick to emphasize that monopolizing AI technology was not the answer and that it shouldn’t belong to any one nation.
“If we become leaders in this area, we will share this know-how with entire world, the same way we share our nuclear technologies today,” he said.
The open lesson was attended by over one million students and teachers from 16,000 schools.
